Coagulant aluminum sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Al₂(SO₄)₃ and a molecular weight of 342.15. It appears as a white coarse crystalline powder with a density of 1.181 g/cm³ (at 25°C). Aluminum sulfate is a multifunctional accelerator widely used in various industries.
In the papermaking industry, aluminum sulfate acts as a precipitant for adhesive materials such as rosin and wax emulsions. It also serves as a flocculant in water treatment and a retention aid for foam fire extinguishers. Additionally, it is a raw material for producing alum stone, petroleum decolorizing and deodorizing agents, and certain pharmaceutical raw materials. It can also be used to manufacture artificial stone and high-grade ammonium alum.
Approximately 50% of the total aluminum sulfate production is used in papermaking, while the second largest use, accounting for about 40%, is as a flocculant for treating drinking water, industrial water, and industrial wastewater. When added to these waters, aluminum sulfate forms colloidal aluminum hydroxide flocs that adsorb and precipitate bacterial colloids and other suspended matter, helping to control water color and taste.
Low-iron aluminum sulfate is a variant with an iron content usually less than 2×10⁻⁵%. This product falls between industrial-grade and iron-free aluminum sulfate, offering better performance than high-iron aluminum sulfate products while remaining more cost-effective.
Application
Industrial aluminum sulfate is mainly used in papermaking, sewage treatment, cement early strength agent, ore dressing and steel impurity removal, etc.
1) Water/wastewater treatment
For purification of drinking water and wastewater treatment, precipitation of impurities by sedimentation and flocculation.
2) Paper industry
Industry Grade Aluminum Sulphate aids in sizing paper at neutral and alkaline pH, resulting in improved sizing efficiency and paper quality (reduced spots and holes, improved paper formation and strength).
3) Textile industry
For fixation of naphthol-based dyes on cotton fabrics. Paper sizing, sugar making, foundry, drug refining, cement quick setting and raw materials, etc.
