Granular aluminum sulfate is an inorganic compound, usually in the form of white granules or blocks. Its chemical formula is Al2(SO4)3·xH2O, and its molecular weight is 342.15 (calculated as Al2(SO4)3). This substance is easily soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol, and its aqueous solution is acidic. When heated to 250°C, aluminum sulfate loses its crystal water and begins to decompose at 300°C.
Application
Flake aluminum sulfate is mainly used in papermaking, drinking water treatment, ore dressing and steel impurity removal, etc.
1) Sewage treatment systems. Aluminium Sulphate is used to purify drinking water and wastewater treatment, precipitating impurities by precipitation and flocculation
2) Paper industry. It helps to size paper at neutral and alkaline pH, thereby improving paper quality (reducing spots and holes, improving paper formation and strength) and sizing efficiency.
3) Textile industry. Aluminium sulphate lump is used for fixation of naphthol-based dyes on cotton fabrics.
4) Other uses. Leather tanning, lubricating compositions, flame retardants; petroleum decolorants, deodorants; food additives; curing agents; dyeing mordants; foaming agents in fire-fighting foams; fire-proof cloths; catalysts; pH control; waterproof concrete; aluminum compounds, zeolites, Petroleum drilling fluid treatment, etc.

Preparation methods of different types of aluminum sulfate
Liquid aluminum sulfate-Preparation method
• Sulfuric acid decomposition of bauxite method:
Crush the bauxite to 60 mesh, react with 55%-60% sulfuric acid under pressure in the reactor for 6-8h, separate the crude reaction liquid by sedimentation, evaporate and concentrate, neutralize the clarified liquid with acid to neutral or slightly alkaline, then cool it to form flakes or cool and solidify it, then crush and screen it to obtain aluminum sulfate products.
• Sulfuric acid decomposition of aluminum hydroxide method:
Aluminum hydroxide reacts with sulfuric acid, the reaction liquid is sedimented and concentrated, then cooled and solidified, crushed and screened to obtain aluminum sulfate products.
• Kaolin method:
Kaolin or clay) is calcined at 700N800℃ and crushed, decomposed with excess sulfuric acid, and then the aluminum sulfate products are obtained by method 1.
• Alunite method:
Alunite is calcined and crushed, dissolved with sulfuric acid, and the insoluble matter is filtered out to obtain a mixed solution of aluminum sulfate and potassium alum. The potassium alum is quickly cooled and crystallized to remove the potassium alum. The mother liquor is evaporated and concentrated, cooled and solidified to obtain aluminum sulfate products.
Powdered aluminum sulfate - Preparation method
It is produced by the pressurized reaction of bauxite with sulfuric acid. It can also be obtained by decomposing alunite, kaolin, and other raw materials containing aluminum oxide and silica using sulfuric acid. Additionally, aluminum sulfate can be produced by adding aluminum hydroxide [Al(OH)₃] to sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄).
