Sulfuric acid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H2SO4. It is the most important oxygen-containing acid of sulfur. Pure sulfuric acid is a colorless oily liquid that crystallizes at 10.36°C. It is usually prepared by tower method and contact method using its various concentrations of aqueous solution. Concentrated sulfuric acid with a mass fraction of 98.3% has a boiling point of 338°C and a relative density of 1.84.

Application
Sulfuric acid is a strong inorganic acid that reacts with most metals. At high concentrations, it has strong hygroscopic properties and can act as a dehydrating agent, capable of carbonizing carbohydrate-containing materials such as wood, paper, cotton and linen fabrics, as well as biological tissues like skin and flesh.
When mixed with water, it releases a significant amount of heat. Due to its high corrosiveness and strong oxidizing nature, it must be handled with extreme caution. Sulfuric acid is a key industrial raw material used in the production of fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, explosives, pigments, detergents, and batteries. It is also widely applied in industries such as oil refining, metal smelting, sewage treatment, water treatment, chemical preparation, and dye manufacturing.
Reagent-grade sulfuric acid is characterized by high purity and minimal impurities. It is mainly used in chemical experiments and analytical procedures. In organic synthesis, it functions as both a dehydrating and sulfonating agent. It also plays an important role in metal pickling, reagent preparation, catalysis, dehydration, and laboratory glassware cleaning.

Preparation method
1. Contact method: This is the main method for preparing sulfuric acid in industry at present. This method uses sulfur or sulfur-containing minerals as raw materials, first burns them to generate sulfur dioxide (SO2), then oxidizes sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide (SO3) through a catalyst (such as vanadium pentoxide), and finally reacts sulfur trioxide with water to generate sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The contact method can prepare high-purity sulfuric acid and is suitable for large-scale industrial production.
2. Sulfation method: This method uses sulfur or sulfur-containing minerals as raw materials, first burns them to generate sulfur dioxide (SO2), then oxidizes sulfur dioxide and oxygen under the action of a catalyst to sulfur trioxide (SO3), and finally reacts sulfur trioxide with water to generate sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The sulfation method is a traditional method for preparing sulfuric acid, but the purity is low and it is suitable for small-scale production.
3. Sulfation-absorption method:
This method combines the characteristics of both the contact process and the sulfation method. First, sulfur or sulfur-containing minerals are burned to produce sulfur dioxide (SO₂). Then, under the action of a catalyst, sulfur dioxide is oxidized with oxygen to form sulfur trioxide (SO₃). Finally, the sulfur trioxide reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid to produce fuming sulfuric acid, which is then absorbed into water through an absorption tower to generate sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄).
The sulfation-absorption method enables the production of high-purity sulfuric acid and is well-suited for large-scale industrial manufacturing.
4. Sulfation-nitration method: This method uses sulfur or sulfur-containing minerals as raw materials, first burns it to generate sulfur dioxide (SO2), then sulfur dioxide and oxygen are oxidized to sulfur trioxide (SO3) under the action of a catalyst, and finally sulfur trioxide is reacted with concentrated sulfuric acid to generate fuming sulfuric acid, and then the fuming sulfuric acid is reacted with nitric acid through a nitration tower to generate nitric acid sulfuric acid, and finally the nitric acid sulfuric acid is absorbed into water through an absorption tower to generate sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The sulfation-nitration method can prepare high-purity sulfuric acid and is suitable for large-scale industrial production.
